Your apxs script is looking for libphp4.so, which does not exist. Your OS compiled your DSO (shared
library) as another extension, ".la". Hack your apxs script to look for the
".la" extension instead. (look for a line like: my $dso_ext = "so"; and
substitute in "la")

I finally got my php make/compile to run to completion, but the make install fails
almost immediately, reporting that libs/libphp4.so is missing (which I presume
should have been built)....see attachment for the failure output.
a listing of the php/libs dir only shows up:
libphp4.a and libphp4.la
Would some kind and wiser soul please tell me either what has gone wrong or what I
should be looking at to figure out where the compile messed up (if it did)?
FWIW, the compile was done on an AIX V5.1 machine, using the IBM C compiler and
referencing the IBM version of Apache (V1.3.19) and IBM's LDAP. The configure
invocation was:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/HTTPServer/bin/apxs --with-ldap=/usr/ldap
