I think with the fix Stefan just commited we'll probably release 5.0.1 in the near future, depending on how many people are bitten by it.
I suggest waiting a few more days while continuing to submit bug reports which we'll most likely be receiving in the coming days, and then branch off the PHP_5_0 branch. Then again, we could branch right now but it would be more of a pain to commit to two branches all of the immediate little stuff.
