It is set to 1 so that we dont miss the end of the headers when reading
the response. (this is a legacy of pre-streams code).
However, we can probably avoid this problem by changing the chunk size
after we have written the headers for our request, but before we read
data from the socket.
I am concerned about the presence of spaces in your strace; it could
indicate a problem in the chunking code in the _php_stream_write
function.
