The big reason for PCRE is the fact that other, rather important extensions such as filter depend on it. SPL is also used by other extensions, which could be a "need" reason.But you can run PHP without filter extension. -- Stanislav Malyshev, Zend Products Engineer stas@zend.com http://www.zend.com/
