There aren't any clean solution for script only PHP (yet) There are 3 methods proposed so far. - php.ini setting that controls embedded-mode https://wiki.php.net/rfc/nophptags - include/require that loads non-embedded mode https://wiki.php.net/rfc/source_files_without_opening_tag - file extension that switch to non-embedded mode https://wiki.php.net/rfc/phpp All of these have pros and cons.
