I think this assumption may actually be pretty unsafe - I think that 'remote' places tend to be linked directly to the US, rather than to the geographically-near neighbors. This definitely applies for .il (Turkey, the 2nd on the list, will be 10x slower than the US for me), but I believe it applies for most of the non-US world (Europe may also be closely interlinked, so maybe non-US non-Euro). It did detect my country code and did put il.php.net as the top choice, so it would have still worked for me :) Zeev At 02:05 26/05/2002, Jim Winstead wrote:
if people could give http://master.php.net/~jimw/closest-mirror.php a try to see if it gives a reasonable sorting of the mirrors for them, furthest away at the bottom), i'd appreciate it. the closest mirrors should be at the top of the list. this is based on the geoip database from maxmind. (i've made a pure-php version of the c library to access that database.) obviously this is just geographic closeness. i think it is safe to assume that the places where geographic closeness does not reasonably correlate with network closeness are more rare than those where it does. you can also check what mirror would be returned for various country codes by add '?cc=MM' to the end, or for a specific ip by adding '?ip=195.34.60.16'. jim
