We use bzip2-compressed files because we are an open source project
providing you with software at no charge whatsoever. Unfortunately
bandwidth is not free and bzip2 is the best compression mechanism out
there. It is offensive that you feel you have the right to complain about
this.
Go read the FAQ:
http://www.php.net/manual/en/faq.misc.php#faq.misc.bz2
There are dozens of free tools that can handle this format.
