Hi, It's a good idea but a second link will work better in this case. Load balancing through the a cname entry is a DNS based solution. Any DNS based solution would be cached at the ISP end. This would mean if the first IP is down then the ISP would not request for the second ip until 24 hrs (cache time expiry). Since a majority of the customers would be coming through Vsnl (80% of the country), then these customers will not be able to access the second server as Vsnl would have already cached the reply for the first one. Also, all customers would come to server 1 when this server is up as the ip would be cached, so no real load balancing would be happening. In case of a second link there would be a 60:40 probability of clicks as more ppl tend to click on the first link. If the DNS solution setup at VSNl's end was smart enough then it would go to the second server. But, I know for a fact that their implementation sucks ;o) (personal experience with multiple solutions that we have implemented till date) Warm Regards, Divyank Turakhia President & Director ---------------------- http://www.directi.com ---------------------- > -----Original Message----- > From: Derick Rethans [mailto:d.rethans@jdimedia.nl] > Sent: Sunday, February 16, 2003 1:52 AM > To: Gabor Hojtsy > Cc: php-mirrors@lists.php.net > Subject: Re: Second Mirror in India > > > On Sat, 15 Feb 2003, Gabor Hojtsy wrote: > > > > I dont think this is a problem, right? > > > > No, but... > > > > >>We would wish to host in2.php.net on an immediate basis. > We would be > > >>provisioning the same on a separate server with an all-together > > >>separate network connection to provide redundancy and at the same > > >>time distribute load across multiple connections. > > > > ... we have a cname for that mirror site.
