Hi Thomas!
Second, Please consider the main search bar on the website. I personally would prefer it if that search box remembered where I wanted to search the site. The default is
always in the function area. I mean if I come to the site and search for 'FOO' in OD
(Online Documentation), when my search results are displayed, all I would need to do
was type "moreFOO' and it would search thru OD by default instead of functions. Now I
am not saying that I want to be able to set my own preferences for how I use the site
and have you store them in a cookie or anything, that would be a huge pain in the butt.
No simply only remember my last choice from current visit. I hope that made sense.
Well, we are going on the way of adding more and more control to our users. The automatic language selection is one of these things. What we need to keep in our minds is that our pages need to be cacbeable, so our servers can handle the load. Last time we added search keyword remembering to the searchbar many guys wowed that they get very different things that they entered last time. That was (regardless of a cookie holding the right value for them) that they got the page from a cache with someone else's remembered value cached. So we cannot generate the page on the server side with this value remembered. We considered ways of doing this on the client side, and JS seems the only way to go. Then we will be able to remember the last search term and selected option in case the user has JS on, and our client side script functions in his/her browser...
Thirdly, This is a big one for me. I made an errata observation in my early visits to the site but figured it would be noticed soon. Now it has been quite some time and I realized
that the longer I procrastinated, the more difficult the task of correcting it could be.
The errata I found is the word 'DEPRECATED', (meaning archaic, to pray against, express
disapproval of, play down and belittle). I am of the mind that you are confusing this with
'DEPRECIATED' (meaning to fall in value, lower in estimation or esteem), which is very
similarly spelled. They're meanings are in some form similar, but I believe in the
this case depreciate is the correct word. I have included below some cut-n-pastes from
the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/) for you to peruse.
Well, I'll forward this piece to the documentation team. There may be some typos in the docs, it's so huge and not easy to maintain. Thanks for taking time to write down your suggestions, and for helping us make the site and the docs better ;) Have a nice day, Goba [one webmaster@php.net]
