It *seems* that something was wrong with the changes that were checked to phpweb today; the load spiked up to around 250 in the last hour or so. I don't have time to evaluate the changes, this could just be a spike in the number of visitors, but for the sake of keeping the box alive I've rolled back the code on www.php.net to the way it was earlier and we seem to be a lot happier now. These changes are on www.php.net only, and I've disabled rsync so that they don't get overwritten. I noticed a couple of tweak-style commits today; please *don't* do that; test it as much as possible until you are 100% sure that it works; keep in mind that the box could cook itself to death if you're not careful :) Let's see how things are going in the morning,
Hm, the code I have added, worked perfectly, and I don't think that could have cause such a huge load. Andrew set www.php.net for searching on Google on all the mirrors, so that is what probably resulted in more traffic again. As all the search results pointed back to www, and then the users were directed to the mirror site. And the same for all searches worldwide. I guess the code can be updated on php.net if we roll that commit back. Anything else that may have caused the problems? I don't know...
Hm, after thinking about it a bit, I don't think that that search change caused the problems. As still every mirror opens a google search page with results to php.net and Wez said that php.net was fixed by reverting. So some other code we have modified/added is guilty. I don't have an idea right now, what code would that be... Goba
