Gabor, I have often expressed my wish to re-do the PHP website as valid XHTML/CSS (without breaking older browsers either!). I have been doing this stuff generally for about 9 months now and have 10 million hacks up my sleeves to make IE6 accept standards compliant code. I was going to do an extensive example of using XHTML/CSS and then reveal it in the hopes that I would be allowed to create a CVS branch and finish the XHTML/CSS version with the aid of the community... As you have already gone some way into doing the XHTML (valid transitional! now lets try strict! :) pretty much valid CSS (just a few warning that can easily be gotten rid of by adding: "background-color: transparent;" to each of the selectors with warnings) and Rasmus has expressed his wish to move in this direction, I would like to openly offer my help to do exactly this. I have yet to take a look at the PHP website source (I understand its quite attrocious) but any help I can give I will do so :) - Davey Gabor Hojtsy wrote:
Hi! Following on my previous trys to create a CSS-P version of the PHP.net footer, I have gone farther, and done the header too. I was able to test it in Mozilla 1.3 [Win and Linux], IE6, Opera 7.11 [Win], Konqueror and Galleon. Every browser I tested seems to display the old table based design [at the top] and the new CSS-P based design [at the bottom] 99% identically. This means a 1-2 pixel difference in positioning at some places, not critical. In the CSS for the new HTML code I needed to use some tricks regarding font sizes, as IE does not inherit font sizes properly. Most of the work was done to make the layout work with IE (while it was already working perfectly in Mozilla and Konqueror). I expect this to work in Safari, as it uses the khtml rendering engine (which is the base of Konqueror too). I was unable to test with older IE versions. I have prepared a framset so you can easily test the two versions. The upper one is the current table based layout (with current style sheet). The one at the bottom is the new CSS-P based one. Advantages of this new version include: - very clean true XHTML code - 1Kb less HTML markup then the old code - enables us to easily provide a print version style sheet,
so there won't be a need to download pages again with printer
    friendly HTML generated around them
Given that the CSS will be cached on the users machine, this takes off 1Kbtye data of every page request, additionaly using this kind of CSS takes of the burden of generating separate pages for print and online viewing from the server. See online: http://goba.hu/phpnet/ Opinions are welcome! Goba
