Hi!
I have added initial support for multicolumn layouts to layout.inc
site_footer() and site_header(), and modified source.php to use this
layout for its two column display.
I have tested the page in Mozilla 1.4 and Konqueror 3.1-12, and it looks
very similar to the previous twocolumn layout. I have selected
source.php because it is far not mission critical and I can show you how
it works online and ask you to test it out in other browsers (primarily
multiple versions of IE).
There is no single <table> on the source.php output on mirrors carrying
the new code, though there were many on the old layout [6 exactly on
this page].
This does not only mean that this page is going to render quicker, but
it also means that the new layout is 1515 bytes lighter (exact measure
for this page).
If you multiply this with number of requests coming in for different two
column pages, you realize that this will be good for our servers, if the
layout prooves to be working in other browsers too, and we expand its usage.
I am conserned about two possible problems we would have with this
layout, the box model bug in IE5 and the 3px rendering bug in IE. I have
not yet added any code to prevent these from appearing, as the layout
was perfect for me in Mozilla and Konqueror, and I was not keen on blind
guessing.
Please see the source page, and check it out in the browser you use. I
would very much appreciate proposed solutions in case you have a clue on
how to fix something which you experience to be broken.

Note that you may need to force the CSS reload to make the page look
right / better.
