"I was perusing dotgeek.org and noticed that on the right hand side of their page they have a link to 'http://php.dotgeek.org/'. This subdomain is an unofficial mirror of php.net. While that in iteself isn't so bad, I find they break the spirit of PHP by showing their logo in the 'This mirror sponsored by' area and at the bottom they have the 'This mirror generously provided by:' text. They make it out as if they are an official mirror
Thanks for visiting dotgeek. We followed the mirroring instructions provided at http://www.php.net/mirroring.php
e.g. we do not sync as often as an official mirror and used the logo option and footer option. I have seen that the webmasters, following your posting, modified the proceedure. I hope it is satisfactory. If the PHP webmaster would like any other change from our side, we will implement them as soon as possible. "and that you guys are thanking them for providing that mirror. That isn't the case. They just provide this mirror as yet one more ploy to add content to their site withot doing any real work."
There is really no ploy. There are a number of PHP sites displaying the PHP manual including their own banner ads and or text ads. Yet I wouldn't say that they are breaking the php spirit. Nor we did.
Dotgeek is an open community without any commercial ambition. We are far from perfect. This is the very reason why everyone, including you, is welcome to contribute. Best Regards David Costa
