But how do you "help" by offering a service with less quality? Even if your server would be connected to 10 OC-256's, the download speeds of people IN ISRAEL [point for which local mirrors exist?], still depends on the ISP's connectivy to the mirror's bandwidth provider. In my case, it is the IIX, which is *not* saturated yet, ever (all ISPs has more bandwidth than demand, see: http://www.isoc.org.il/fr_reload.html?iix/2x_traffic.4), and in your case it is the almost-always-saturated-link - meaning that you can never really be able to compete with the speeds from local peering! For that reason alone, the PHP people rejected mirrors whose IP peering is outside the suggested country (see the mailing-list's postings archive) - it will never be as fast. This is not about the mirrors bandwidth to their peers, the question is what bandwidth do you have to your target audience, and unfortunately in Israel the answer is: "not much"... If you know something about bandwidth and latency that I don't, I would certainly be glad to learn; Hosting in Israel costs much more than in the States, and there must be some reason (assuming that I am talking nonsense here :)) that people choose to host here and pay X 5 for exactly the same service (for your claims - even worse service!)... We can continue this discussion off-list if you want... :) On Fri, 2004-10-22 at 10:23, Rosenberg Arkady wrote: > Well, Shimi, darling, nobody fights your server! > > It's all about help! > The linux-maniac signature is pretty cool, the average statistics also, > but the 6 (six) OC12 (622.08 mbps) lines to our servers is cooler ;) > Those lines have more capacity, than any Israeli ISP, so, putting there > a mirror will provide a fine bandwidth to all Israeli IPS - which is not > too bad. > If the idea is about mirroring stuff for some other country, which is > closer to the Ohio State, well, it is possible, but without such > excitement. > Since I'm patriotic also ;) > > All I'm saying, is "anybody wanna help?" > > > -----Original Message----- > From: shimi [mailto:shimi@shimi.net] > Sent: Friday, October 22, 2004 7:27 AM > To: ceo@host1.co.il > Cc: mirrors@php.net > Subject: Re: hello guys > > I was surprised to hear that a machine outside Israel is giving a better > bandwidth than a machine inside Israel, connected one hop from the > Israeli Internet eXchange (IIX), so I tried your download: > > $ wget > http://www.host1.co.il/mirrors/distributions/php-4.3.9-Win32.zip > --07:17:33-- > > http://www.host1.co.il/mirrors/distributions/php-4.3.9-Win32.zip > => `php-4.3.9-Win32.zip' > 07:18:47 (95.56 KB/s) - `php-4.3.9-Win32.zip' saved [7120037/7120037] > > And then the same file from my mirror: > > --07:21:30-- > http://il.php.net/distributions/php-4.3.9-Win32.zip > => `php-4.3.9-Win32.zip' > 07:22:07 (193.12 KB/s) - `php-4.3.9-Win32.zip' saved [7120037/7120037] > > My DSL line capacity is ~195KB/s. > > Now I did this test when the international communications lines are > pretty "clear", at 7:20am.
