I was downloading it from http://www.php.net/downloads.php. I have since
discovered that it's a "feature" of the PC version of Netscape. It
doesn't like trying to save a file that has muliple dots in it, so it
alters the ending of the file by default. Unfortunately you never get
a chance to see what the original file name is unless it shows up in the
status bar at the bottom of the Netscape window.
After sending the email, I ran into simular problems elsewhere and decided
to try and launch a UNIX version of Netscape. When I attempted to download
the files, it retained its .tar.gz ending. Since I'm running off a PC (but
have Exceed so I *can* start up some UNIX programs), I tend to use the
PC version of Netscape (which is the "preferred" method here so as to
remove the burdon from the UNIX server).
As far as I can see, there's no way to alter the PC version of Netscape
to force it to default to the file's real name regardless of how many
dots there are in it. Proving once again that Windows is the root of all
evil and Bill Gates is the Spawn of Hell.
