I needed to install tidy support on Ubuntu Breezy 5.10 (with various current php5-*-5.0.5-2ubuntu1.1
and apache2 packages already installed, including php-pear), and after much scratching around
finally figured out I could it like this:
1. $ sudo aptitude install php5-dev tidy libtidy0 libtidy-dev
2. $ pear install tidy
3. select the "[automatic detection]" option when prompted for the location of the
libtidy install directory
4. subsequently edit /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and/or /etc/php5/cli/php.ini depending on whether
you want tidy to work with both the apache-based interpreter (remember to restart apache2 to
activate the change) or the command line version or both to include the following line at the
*bottom* of the file:
---
extension=tidy.so
---
Note - if you decide to leave any comments in the php.ini files to describe what you've done
(recommended), remember that the comment character is ";" not "#" (that one bit
me :) )
5. confirm that tidy support is installed either by - for the apache version - creating a file with
<?php phpinfo(); ?> in it within your web document root (and then cruise to it with your
browser and do a search on "tidy"), or - for the cli version - with
$ php -i | grep tidy
Hope that helps!
