Some comments on the install process in SuSE: SuSE has a weird layout of config files for apache, so
the automatic config fails on this distribution.
To set up the apache environment manually, after "make install" fails you'll need to
do all the other "make install" sections that didn't get done to get everything
installed, so:
# make install
(this should fail at the 'install-sapi' stage, but after the module is installed)
# make install-cli install-build install-headers install-programs install-pear
(this should succeed)
Now you need to fix the apache config:
# cd /usr/lib/apache2-prefork [or worker if you use it]
# ln -s ../apache2/libphp5.so .
You now have a copy of the module in the place the config file will look for it. Edit
/etc/sysconfig/apache2 and find the line that starts "APACHE_MODULES=" and add
"php5" to the end of the list. Remove "php4" if it's there.
At this point you may want to rename /etc/apache2/conf.d/php4.conf to .../php5.conf, and perhaps add
an entry for '.php5' if you're that way inclined. Or you can leave it as it was in
the default install. If you don't have it, create it:
<IfModule sapi_apache2.c>
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
DirectoryIndex index.php
</IfModule>
Now run:
# /etc/rc.d/apache2 restart
This should rebuild /etc/apache2/sysconfig.d/loadmodules.conf to include php5, and you're in
business.
