The GD library, prior to 2.x, does not appear to process images with more than 256 colors without
first converting them to a 256 color indexed (palette) image.
In other words, if you have a truecolor JPEG or PNG and you load the image up with these functions
(e.g., imagecreatefrompng()) then the internal resource will be a palettized version of your
original. The only information I found about this were in a few separate comments spread around
this section.
If you compile PHP with a 2.0 or higher version of the GD library, then the internal image resource
will not be subjected to this automatic conversion. I believe that all the RedHat PHP RPMs (as of
today) still come compiled with the older version of GD (pre 2.0).
