The GD library, prior to 2.x, does not appear to process images with more than 256 colors without first converting them to a 256 color indexed (palette) image. In other words, if you have a truecolor JPEG or PNG and you load the image up with these functions (e.g., imagecreatefrompng()) then the internal resource will be a palettized version of your original. The only information I found about this were in a few separate comments spread around this section. If you compile PHP with a 2.0 or higher version of the GD library, then the internal image resource will not be subjected to this automatic conversion. I believe that all the RedHat PHP RPMs (as of today) still come compiled with the older version of GD (pre 2.0). -- http://www.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php http://master.php.net/manage/user-notes.php?action=edit+28570 http://master.php.net/manage/user-notes.php?action=delete+28570 http://master.php.net/manage/user-notes.php?action=reject+28570
