In the code of gordon at kanazawa-gu dot ac dot jp, long subjects become corrupted when using utf-8
encoding because of the length parameter. The following version works even with utf-8:

// ...
// determine length of encoded text within chunks
// and ensure length is even
$length = 75 - strlen($start) - strlen($end);
$length = floor($length/4) * 4;
// ...
?>
