First of all thank you so much Richie for finding a fix for the UTF8 problem! However you have a syntax error in your statement: $result = mysql_query("set names 'utf8'";); It should be: $result = mysql_query("set names 'utf8';"); If the colon is really necessary i don't know but it works..
