I haven't changed my default PHP flags, and still:
root@localhost:~# equery u php | grep -i simplexml
+simplexml
and
root@localhost:~# php -r "phpinfo();" | grep -i 'simplexml support'
Simplexml support => enabled
So SimpleXML is pretty available by default. I guess that Gentoo users note was not that helpful.
