Be careful of order of operations.
for example, you may want to check if the second bit is set:
<?php
if ($x & 2 == 2) {
/* code */
}
?>
is different than
<?php
if (($x & 2) == 2) {
/* code */
}
?>
and the latter of the two should be used.
