Found after a number of hours that you will need to escape the blackslashes for this to work
$letter = "Y";
$location = "\\\\IP address\\sharename";
$user = "USERNAME";
$pass = "PASSWORD";
system("net use ".$letter.": \"".$location."\"

$myDirectory = opendir("Y:/FOLDER");
