It looks like when you're using "php" without arguments (CGI mode) when PHP will see
__halt_compiler(); it will instantly end getting data (like when having line with just EOF character
(CTRL+D)) and will try to interpret data. So following code when inserted to "php" will
make "Hello, world!" appear just after __halt_compiler(); without even asking for stuff
after it.
<?php
echo "Hello, world!";
__halt_compiler();
// at this point, PHP interprets stuff with waiting for rest
?>
