Cutting off at 8 characters is common, Solaris does this as well as a few others. In Solaris it
seems that both username and password are limited to 8 chars. I don't think crypt does this but
is an aspect of the os.
I know for a year I thought my password was something it wasn't, I had a 12 letter password for
root, and me and the other admin had the pw, turns out we were both using different letters past 8
and both worked. We finally figured out what was happening!
