About that 8 characters problem. It is just part of the CRYPT_STD_DES algorith. Just take a look at
man crypt(3).
"By taking the lowest 7 bit of each character of the key, a 56-bit key is
obtained.". Then 56 bits taking 7 bits per character is just 8 characters.
