Note that if you are running with register_globals set to off, you don't need this function,
and shouldn't use it. Instead, just call start_session() and subsequently access
$HTTP_SESSION_VARS as if it were a normal array; it will be persistent across pages (at least after
you call start_session()), and changes you make to it will "stick."
