I was trying to compile PHP 3 with Informix support on Digital Unix (a.k.a. Compaq Tru64, a.k.a.
OSF1) with the DEC C compiler when I got a complaint about an undefined identifier: dec_t in the
file functions/ifx.ec.
<br>
It took me a long time to figure out that the "cure" for this ill is to make sure that
the compiler defines the C preprocessor identifier __STDC__. This indicates that the
compiler's language is ANSI standard compliant C.
<br>
The definition for dec_t lives in the file /usr/informix/incl/esql/sqlhdr.h and conditional
compilation macros ("#ifdef") invoke it only if __STDC__ is defined. To do this with the
DEC C compiler, you must be sure to invoke it with the flag "-std". If you use GCC
instead, you won't have to worry about this, since it always claims to be "standard
C."
<p>
In case you're wondering, I was using DEC C because in my opinion it runs faster and is a bit
more stable than GCC in my particular environment.
