I want to share an experience I had that caused me four days of non-stop grief until I figured out
how I had messed up my php/apache configuration. No doubt more knowledgable php administrators
wouldn't have made this mistake, but this note isn't for them anyway <grin>.
I run php4.03 as a dynamic module under apache httpd. I've set up a directory to contain
various utility php scripts and class definitions that is outside of the httpd document tree (I did
this as a security measure).
I configured apache to alias this directory to /php/, along the lines that apache suggests for
cgi-bin scripts.
Unfortunately, if you ScriptAlias such a directory, none of the php scripts in it will be visible...
and you won't get any clear error messages as to what is wrong. Instead, you'll get the
"premature end of script" error message from apache.
"Alias"ing such a directory works fine. "ScriptAlias"ing it does not.
