I use imagecopyresampled to downsample two different images (as large as 1280x1024) to generate real-time branding on truecolor jpeg images. The server does this around 100,000 times a day all in real-time and doesn't skip a beat. I don't see any 11.5 second delay, maybe a second at most. But, a second isn't much considering it loads and decodes a 1280x1024 jpeg image, downsamples it to 20x20, creates truetype text, downsamples it to overlay on the 1280x1024 image, compresses it back to jpeg, and sends it to the visitor. To me, it appears to be quite fast all things considered.
