This is a problem (somewhere) with php.ini. In the past, I have NOT copied over php.ini-dist after
doing a build, instead just editing the values that I need. This is what caused the session problem
on my servers.
To fix, all I had to do was copy over the php.ini-dist to /usr/local/lib/php.ini, and I was then
able to configure and customize everything, with sessions working just fine. I might make the
effort one of these days to figure out exactly what line it is in the file, but not just yet ....
