wondering... now here's a function to return the character set of the client connection, why
isn't there a function (or why is this function not able) to SET the character set of the
connection? maybe an extra parameter to mysql_connect() or mysql_pconnect() ?
since we're working on a multilingual database, SELECTs with ORDER BY clauses are causing us a
headache. i've read in the MySQL manual that actually the character set used for encoding and
sorting etc. can be chosen from the already installed character sets at connection time. is there a
possibility to do this from PHP's connect calls? and if not, anyone knowing a roundabout?
