I suffered the same phenomena (in RedHat Linux Versions mysql_close does not work), in PHP 4.0.X
versions.
As I turned my Linux Server to DEBIAN, suddendly, the mysql_close function functions (and bugs
appeared).
I can't figure out whether the problem is with the Linux, or MySQL, or PHP, but one thing is
true, not ALL Linux versions exhibit this phenomena.
