Minor correction to my previous note:
Of course, you can use realpath() to make things simpler.
zip_open( "../data/myfile.zip" );
// this doesn't work
zip_open( "W:\\siteroot\\data\\myfile.zip" );
// this works (Windows systems)
zip_open( "/home/zontar/www/data/myfile.zip" );
// this works (*nix systems)
zip_open( realpath( "../data/myfile.zip" ) );
// this also works, and is portable between systems
