note 35689 added to function.mail

I get this error because I need to authenticate a user name and password with my own smtp mail server. How do I add this so my mail will work? Warning: mail() [function.mail]: Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini or use ini_set() It works fine if I disable authentication but then spammers send thousands of emails through my smtp server.
