FYI, Verisign's "wonderful" new SiteFinder initiative, which seeks to capitalize on misspellings entered into browser location bars, affects this function's ability to determine the validity of a host. It took me a while to figure out why my e-mail validation routine was suddenly letting bogus host names through.
