There is a small error in your code, jonathan ! it's base64_encode and not base64_code.
Furthermore, a nice way of handling real long arrays is to compress them; I use:
Compression:
$var_querystring = base64_encode(gzcompress(serialize($some_array)));
Decompression:
$some_array = unserialize(gzuncompress(base64_decode($var_querystring )));
