I have found that although I was not using an .htaccess file for login purposes (I have a seperate
login screen), creating an .htaccess with just the line
php_value register_globals 0
in it would turn off register_globals without popping up the usual htaccess login prompt. .htaccess
could therefore be used in this was as a simple configuration file for the directory.
