If anyone is interested, there is an excellent tutorial site on setting up PHP with Apache2, zlib,
and ssl for win32/linux at:
http://www.devside.net
One good point they make:
For best performance, turn PHP's output buffering on, turn off php's output compression,
and let Apache's mod_deflate handle it. Most installations I have seen have both PHP's and
Apache's zlib on?!
Another point:
If you are correcting some of the problems that older browsers have with receiving compressed pages,
as in the earlier versions of Netscape, you need to add to the 'Vary' header
"User-Agent"; due to any proxies that would change the user agent string of the client.
But with Apache2, you have to use 'SetOutputFilter DEFLATE' rather than the cleaner
'AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml'. See the site on why.
