I have written an extension to ldap_search to also sort the entries.
It adds a ninth parameter ...[, string sort]]]]]] to the argument list of ldap_search.
[sort] takes a single or comma separated list of Attributes to sort after.
[sort] might be "cn" for example, or "cn, mail".
The patch is against PHP4.0.6 and can be found at http://www.nrg4u.com
