I've noticed that if you systematically use
function & functionName () {};
The calls with or without & will work as intended (that is the caller can decide if he/she wants
a reference or a copy).
Kind of strange programming, I think (setting the reference or value return from the calling script)
but I think if PHPeople really wanted to endorse it, they'd put & automatically before each
function call.
