This may be too obvious too mention for many of you, but I spent two days trying to fix it. I was
trying to run PHP 4.3 under Apache.
In the end the problem was I had put my .php file in my CGI directory (defined by a ScriptAlias
directive) (from which I run PERL scripts and which I need to have). Apache ignored the fact that
PHP was loaded as a module and tried to run the script file without doing necessary set up of the
environment for running PHP as a CGI program (specifically REDIRECT_STATUS)
I finally identified this problem by a useful trick worth mentioning since it showed error messages
that didn't appear anywhere else: Namely I telnetted to my web server (localhost, port 80) and
issued a "GET /cgi/myfile.php" which then issued a warning about CGI_REDIRECT that
ultimately led me to find the above problem. My web browser lost all of this information and just
gave a generic error page.
