You could simplify that by using single qoutes, as double quotes are interpolated.
"\\\\\\\\" after string interpolation is \\\\ and after regex interpolation is \\
If you use single quotes then there is no interpolation on the '\' character at the string
level and '\\\\' is all that is needed.
so split('\\\\', $_SERVER['AUTH_USER']); would suffice :)
