For those of you thinking about using XML in a way in which an file will be parsed each time a page
is loaded (i.e. part of a CMS system), consider the slowdown, and also consider that
xml_prase_into_struct is ussually about twice as slow as writing your own custom parser of
reasonable complexity. That's before you add in any of the examples below.
Some of the code below and sites that have automatic xml -> php and php -> xml data
translation are *very* useful, BUT they can take anywhere from 5 to 50 milliseconds to process a
smallish (1 - 2kb) XML file on a fast server, which makes it unacceptable for high volume use. So
after days of research and looking for an easy way out: if you need a speedy solution for processing
XML files on each page load, and are stuck with PHP4, you're really really best to roll your
own custom solution for the data structures you're dealing with.
