attention Debian GNU/Linux 'testing' and 'unstable' users: it might save you some time to know that PHP's command-line functionality is enabled most easily by installing a package called "php4-cli". as root, simply enter "apt-get install php4-cli" at the command line, and the job is done. you can test your installation right away by issuing "php -v" at the prompt, which should give you something like ..
