I also just encountered the mssql_query() error whereby UPDATE and INSERT queries appear to return
FALSE even if successful.
I believe I have discovered the answer. Simply insert the following before your queries:
mssql_min_error_severity( 2 );
Read the man page on this function call and you will see that mssql has several error
"levels". The default setting is 10, which appears to mean that even warning-type errors
are being triggered, thus mssql_query() returns FALSE.
