Thanks jchase, i was going nuts with that one :)
The problem was, even with write permission, I kept getting permission denied... only after a while
i realized the user/group owning the directory and running the application were different since I
had migrated the site (previously everything was working fine, I guess the user (or group) were the
same back then).
So if anyone else has this problem... either set permissions to 0777 or check the user/group for the
directory to see if 0775/0755 will suffice.
