From the manual: Note: This function is only available if PHP is compiled with the bundled version of the GD library. If you're trying to recompile php from a custom GD lib to the built in GD lib you may run in to make errors regarding undefined functions. This may be due to the configure script having already found system gd.h's and still using them and annoyingly a make clean on it's own doesn't always fix it.
