Hi all,
We are serious about moving forwards on an improved PDO 2, and about making the process for contributing to it easier for everyone; PDO 2 need not be dependent on a CLA, so calling out to boycott improving PDO on the basis that there *might* be a CLA is a little bit extreme.
So is unilaterally putting a closed module into php.net CVS, Wez. Consider your wrist slapped.
Obviously, Andi and myself believe that a CLA will be beneficial, which is why we've structured our initial mail in this way. The question is, what will the CLA cost us, and if that cost is too high for the community, what other options do we have to take advantage of the offer of help from the vendors?
Has anybody considered the option of maintaining CLA'd modules in non-php.net territory (I'm thinking of Zend) and donating specs/code from there to php.net? Apart from resolving the legal dilemma, it might nudge individual developers into making a spare-time commitment to php.net if they see their baby going into the wilds... It probably wouldn't solve the problem of what we do if another Wez/Ilia/Marcus turns up with bright ideas for PDO development, but it would at least allow php.net folks to maintain the code. - Steph
